Stay in Calderdale, West Yorkshire

The market town of Hebden Bridge, West Yorkshire, England lies in the north-central region of the country, and the western part of the county. It also lies at the confluence of two rivers, the Calder and the Hebden (also known as 'Hebden Water'). It enjoys a current population of about 4, 500 people. Sitting as it does in the larger Metropolitan Borough of Calderdale it has a wider population of nearly 12, 000 people.

The original settlement actually was an outgrowth of a hilltop village called Heptonstall. Today's Hebden Bridge sits in a direct southeasterly direction from its ancestor, which is somewhat smaller, at about 1, 500 people. The town's name comes from 'Heptenbryge, ' an Old English word. It is within the town, which provides a crossing-over point for the River Hebden and where an old bridge stood, that 'Hebden Bridge' eventually came to be.

In the 19th and 20th centuries, the town made for an ideal spot for weaving mills, which were powered by the flow of waters of the Hebden River. It was such a vigorous producer of clothing and cloth that it once came to be called 'Trouser Town.' The town continued to develop slowly over the years, eventually gaining a local cinema.

During the Second World War, Hebden Bridge served as a designated "reception area, " which acted as host for many people who had fled the industrial cities of the country, fearful of the daily bombing runs of the German air forces. Postwar Hebden Bridge - especially during the 1970s and 1980s - experienced an in-migration of artists and other creative sorts of people. It has lately become a tourist destination.

The ceremonial and metropolitan county of West Yorkshire, in whose boundaries Hebden Bridge sits, currently enjoys a population of around 2. 2 million people, ranking it 4th in size (population-wise) in counties in the country. It is also completely landlocked. Both the town and the county are prime examples of classic English living.
