Haworth Tourist Information, Shopping and Events

Haworth Village, Haworth is a place of literary pilgrimage with huge numbers of visitors flocking to this picturesque West Yorkshire town due to worldwide interest in the Bronte sisters. Patrick Bronte and his family came to Haworth Parsonage in 1820 and this remained their main home base for the rest of their lives. Haworth offers a superb choice of charming B&Bs and the renowned cobbled Main Street in Haworth is crammed with arts, crafts and second hand bookshops, as well as cafes, pubs and tea rooms. Some of the favourite haunts are the divine Rose Apothecary and the Fleece Pub which has a full range of Timothy Taylors bitters, both on Main Street. For the collector there are a fabulous range of antique and collectables shops that will keep one happy for hours browsing, other such shops include gift and fairtrade, clothing shops, bakeries, tearooms and cafes and fine cookware and houseware.

Haworth has a wide selection of events held during the year namely the Haworth 1940s weekend in May and the Haworth Arts Festival. Also watch out for the event on Victorian Christmas at Haworth Week end. For further information contact the Haworth Tourist Information on 01535 642329

The Haworth was the home of the Bronte family from 1820. The interior rooms and furnishings are as they would have been when occupied by Emily and Charlotte Bronte. The Bronte Museum is a must when you come to Haworth and further information can be found through the detailed Bronte Parsonage Museum webguide. The museum is open every day from 10.00 April to September and 11.00 from October to March.
Except 24-27 December and 2-3 January.

The Keighley and Worth Valley Steam Railway is a must when you visit Haworth. A renovated 5 mile stretch of track and Haworth Station on this line is considered to be the headquarters and has a large shop stacked with films and books for real railway enthusiasts and has an excellent children’s book and to section

For those who wish to stretch their legs further a field there is the hike from Haworth up to Top Withens. It is one of the highlights for Bronte fans visiting the area. The ruined Top Withens farmhouse is thought to have been the inspiration for 'Wuthering Heights', specifically the Earnshaw farmhouse in the classic novel by Emily Bronte. The walk is well signposted from Haworth's Bronte Parsonage Museum, and details and leaflets are available from Haworth Tourist Information Centre. It has been quoted in Slyvia Plath’s Journals that there are two ways to the ‘stone house, both tiresome’. In the 1950 not many would have made it up the stone house whereas now it is so popular that the signposts are in several languages.

p from the Parsonage, past Bronte Falls and onwards. Nowadays it's all well signposted in several languages and the paths are well marked. You can get guides from the Tourist Information Centre

The Stanbury Alternative
The walk is that bit longer if taken from Haworth centre, past the Bronte Parsonage (around 6 miles return). Alternatively you can begin at Stanbury, just before Haworth (take the path up from the bus stop). In Stanbury you'll find a couple of pubs to 'fuel up' with food and ale before or after the walk.

The Pennine Way & The Bronte Way
The Top Withins ruins actually sit on the Pennine Way National Trail, and the stunning moorlands of Haworth and Keighley Moors are popular with walkers.

The 43 mile (69km) Bronte Way is the definitive trail for Bronte fans. The trail takes in many key sites related to the Brontes including Thornton/Pondon Hall inspiration for Thrushcross Grave in Wuthering Heights, Haworth village and the Bronte Parsonage and the Kay-Shuttleworth's home Gawthorpe Hall in Padiham near Burnley to which Charlotte Bronte made frequent visits. Pick up a copy of the Ramblers Association's publication 'Bronte Way' by Marie Wilson for a comprehensive guide to walking this trail and its links and historic sites pertaining to the Brontes.
